our third day in maui, nicholas and i took maggie (our red mustang) on the road to Hana. from what we read (and heard), the road to hana is about the journey itself. not about actually getting to hana. its all about stopping and exploring and frolicking in waterfalls. if you drove straight there, it would take about 2 hours. but, we took our time and it took us about 7 hours to get there!
we had our maui revealed guidebook in tow, which highlighted which mile-makers to stop at. a lot of the time, you can't see anything from the road, but if you take a short hike off the road, there would be a magnificent waterfall that otherwise you would have completely passed by. very cool.
we left our hotel early, stopped at cj's deli & diner for a packed picnic and hit the road at 8am.
on the road.
every turn was a one-way road, so if we couldn't see around the bend, we'd honk our horn to let anyone on the other side know that we were coming!
referring to our handy guidebook.
using the 10 second delay on the camera to take pictures together! (i really need a remote.)
first waterfall. this is one that we would've driven right by! (mile 10)
my handsome husband.
enjoying the view.
maggie the mustang. oh by the way, we thought we were so cool when we got our mustang. but, turns out everyone rents mustangs. there were at least 7 in the parking lot at the hotel. and we saw about 25 on the road! we weren't that cool after all. but, we still liked it.
lots of these, too.
the bridge at my favorite waterfall! (between miles 19 and 20)
three bears falls. this was the coolest waterfall!
we hiked down, swam in the pond, sunbathed, soaked it all in.
it was about a 15 minute hike to the falls.
heaven. and we stayed long enough that everyone else left and we had the whole waterfall to ourselves.
our last stop was the black sand beach at Wai'anapanapa.
except it wasn't really sand.
not sure what was going on with my bangs that day, but i love this picture!
check out our hotel in part three!
